Burning KOIN gets you virtual hash power, that is used to mine a block. Similar to proof of work, but without needing to run expensive hardware. As you mine blocks, your virtual hash power will diminish over time, requiring you to burn more to continue producing. You are guaranteed to make a profit over some period of time, but that time is dependent on how many other people are mining. You can also sell your virtual hash power to exit block production entirely, but probably less than what you would get in rewards (this will be determined by the free market).
